Strategic Partnership between the National Technical University of Athens and ELKEME, the Research & Development Centre of the Viohalco Group

The National Technical University of Athens signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with ELKEME, the Research & Development (R&D) Centre of the Viohalco Group, as part of the ongoing collaboration that has developed between both parties. The aim of the partnership is to strengthen and further advance activities and programmes in the areas of education, research, innovation, and professional networking.

Commenting on the signing of the Memorandum, NTUA Rector Professor Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou stated:

“Our goal is an open, outward-looking institution — one that engages with society through creative synergies and collaborations with distinguished organisations that share our vision for excellence, a commitment to the younger generation and future scientists, innovation, and sustainable development. The signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between NTUA and Viohalco, one of the country’s most historic industrial groups with a decisive contribution to Greece’s industrial and technological progress, is a significant step for our institution. It substantially reinforces the bridge connecting higher education and academic excellence with the economy and the labour market, to the benefit of the next generation of engineers. NTUA and the Viohalco companies, along with ELKEME, share a long tradition of collaboration, while today’s agreement formalises and further strengthens this long-standing relationship of trust.”

Mr. Kimon Danielidis, General Director of ELKEME, stated: “The signing of the memorandum of cooperation is the cornerstone of a meaningful link between industry and the academic community — in this case with NTUA. Activating this partnership will leverage the deep knowledge and expertise of both parties, providing additional momentum to the sector’s growth and at the same time supporting efforts to retain Greece’s outstanding domestic scientific talent.”

The key areas of emphasis include:

  • Research partnerships in the fields of Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy, and Architectural Design.
  • Partnerships and promotion of innovative ideas and proposals in the areas of Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy, and Architectural Design.
  • Industrial Doctoral Programmes.
  • Development of Professional Postgraduate Programmes.
  • Internship opportunities for students and professional employment for NTUA graduates within Viohalco Group companies.
  • Provision of scholarships for outstanding students and graduates.

The National Technical University of Athens and Columbia Engineering successfully co-organised the first scientific workshop of the current year, entitled «Infrastructure and Energy Sustainability in a Changing Climate». The event brought together distinguished Professors from both universities, many of whom are NTUA alumni. The workshop was held at the Zografou Polytechnic Campus, attracting students, researchers, and Professors, and was also available via live stream, which was watched in real time by more than 700 viewers.

The presentations and discussions focused on critical challenges of the energy and environmental transition, covering topics such as:

  • Decarbonisation of the building stock through advanced analytical tools
  • The use of trustworthy artificial intelligence to address climate change
  • The challenges and limits of smart cities
  • The application of artificial intelligence in autonomous mobility

The presentations covered, among other topics:

  • The sustainable electrification of Europe’s first «Renewable Energy Valley»
  • Strategies for reducing the carbon footprint
  • Technological solutions for fire prevention and suppression
