The National Technical University of Athens is placing sustainability at the heart of its operations and developing a comprehensive strategy that establishes it as a model of environmental responsibility. The platform “National Technical University of Athens – Sustainable Development” available at https://sustainability.ntua.gr/ presents the initiatives already underway, ranging from energy conservation and the promotion of the circular economy to awareness and public engagement activities.
The sustainable development strategy is the first comprehensive framework that consolidates and highlights the actions of the past ten years. It was born from the initiative of the NTUA administration and through the active collaboration of faculty members from the schools of the National Technical University of Athens and members of the European Alliance EULiST (Prof. Eir. Koronaki and El. Alexandrou), students and researchers, with the particular contribution of Dr. T. Roubedakis.
At the centre are energy-saving interventions featuring new air conditioning systems, efficient lighting, and infrastructure that reduces energy consumption, as well as initiatives for integrating renewable energy sources, recycling, improving the campus environment, and raising public awareness.
By initially targeting a 20% reduction in energy consumption by 2030 and subsequently aiming for climate neutrality by 2050, the National Technical University of Athens is creating the Living Lab, a unique space for experimentation and collaboration where students, researchers, and social stakeholders develop applications with immediate value for society and the market.
Particular importance is also given to CO₂ emissions recording, a process that extends beyond energy consumed in buildings to include the daily commuting of the university community. In this way, a clear picture of NTUA’s true environmental footprint is formed and the path is opened for targeted measures towards climate neutrality and sustainability.
Through open public initiatives and student competitions that mobilize the new generation, NTUA bridges education with action and brings sustainability to the centre of academic life. The platform “National Technical University of Athens – Sustainable Development” demonstrates how academic knowledge can contribute to a society that is responsible in the face of environmental challenges.
