The Park and the City: 2nd Festival at the Lavrio Technology and Cultural Park, 11 and 12 October 2025. Central theme: the presentation of the project «Decontamination and Restoration of the “Konofagos” Building»

The Administration of EADIP-NTUA invites all colleagues and collaborators of the institution to the 2nd Festival organised by the Lavrio Technology and Cultural Park, entitled The Park and the City, on 11 and 12 October.

The centrepiece of the festival is the presentation of the project «DECONTAMINATION AND RESTORATION OF THE “KONOFAGOS” BUILDING», located within the LTCP. This marks the completion of the remediation of the “Konofagos” flue-gas filter building and the neutralisation of a long-standing, simultaneously immediate and serious public health and environmental safety hazard in the area. The project, extremely complex and unique on a global scale, required the application of internationally innovative technologies and significant effort to secure the necessary funding. At the same time, the building was structurally reinforced and restored, and delivered to the series of restored historic buildings of the former GEML complex, which constitute a protected ensemble  of great historical significance for the country, and which is also particularly associated with NTUA, as its name attests.

We note that the project was implemented within the framework of the European Operational Programme EPAnEK 2014-2020 of ESPA 2014-2020.

Two outstanding artistic events, related to the tangible and intangible identity of the Lavreotiki region, complete the festival: The dance performance “Underthumbs”, by choreographers K. Gevetzi and M. Trikka, inspired by miners around the world and all those who live and work underground, and the avant premiere of Nikos Kornilios’ film “The Sea in Winter”, filmed entirely in the Lavreotiki, with large segments at the LTCP.

The aim of this year’s festival is to celebrate the ever-growing ties with the city of Lavrio and the steadfast support for the technological development and cultural progress of the local community, which in turn has believed in and supported the Park.

The National Technical University of Athens and Columbia Engineering successfully co-organised the first scientific workshop of the current year, entitled «Infrastructure and Energy Sustainability in a Changing Climate». The event brought together distinguished Professors from both universities, many of whom are NTUA alumni. The workshop was held at the Zografou Polytechnic Campus, attracting students, researchers, and Professors, and was also available via live stream, which was watched in real time by more than 700 viewers.

The presentations and discussions focused on critical challenges of the energy and environmental transition, covering topics such as:

  • Decarbonisation of the building stock through advanced analytical tools
  • The use of trustworthy artificial intelligence to address climate change
  • The challenges and limits of smart cities
  • The application of artificial intelligence in autonomous mobility

The presentations covered, among other topics:

  • The sustainable electrification of Europe’s first «Renewable Energy Valley»
  • Strategies for reducing the carbon footprint
  • Technological solutions for fire prevention and suppression
  • Innovative approaches to infrastructure monitoring using IoT and non-destructive testing methods
  • Measures to enhance infrastructure resilience and adaptation to climate change

This workshop is the first in a series of events to follow within the framework of the collaboration between NTUA and Columbia University.
