The 1st NTUA Innovation Marathon (Hackathon) Concludes Successfully

The 1st two-day Innovation Marathon (Hackathon) organised by the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre of the National Technical University of Athens at the Zografou Polytechnic Campus, on 28 February and 1 March 2026, concluded successfully.

The event was implemented within the framework of the Action “Strategic Research Plan of the National Technical University of Athens” (MIS 5180665), which forms part of the Operational Programme Greece 2.0 and is co-funded by the European Union.

Over two days, students and researchers collaborated intensively, developed and refined innovative ideas, and presented them before the Final Evaluation Committee, showcasing the creativity, research dynamism, and entrepreneurial spirit flourishing at NTUA.

The distinguished teams were as follows:

1st Prize: FlexGrid AI

The FlexGrid AI team, comprising Mr. Panagiotis Babatsias, Mr. Georgios Tzamourannis, and Mr. Nikolaos Katsaidonis, is developing software for the smart management of electric vehicle charging networks using AI agents.

2nd Prize: TheiAgro

The TheiAgro team, comprising Mr. Efthymios Chrysanthopoulos and Mr. Petros Stratis, focuses on the creation of artificial intelligence tools for near-real-time remote monitoring of nutrient levels in the field.

3rd Prize: The Pathfinders

The Pathfinders team, comprising Mr. Grigorios Konstantinos Stamatiadis and Mr. Christos Vlasis, is developing a smart platform that connects drivers and passengers with the aim of optimising travel and reducing the environmental footprint.

The successful conclusion of the Hackathon was made possible thanks to the contribution of the Advisory Committee and the Final Evaluation Committee, in which Assistant Professor Athanasios Voulodimos, Professor Maria Papadopoulou, Assistant Professor Ioannis Papoutssis, and Professor Dimitrios Fotakis participated. Particularly valuable was also the mentoring provided by Ms. Ilektra Karasante, Ms. Varvara Antoniou, and Ms. Eleni Tapta.

The National Technical University of Athens and Columbia Engineering successfully co-organised the first scientific workshop of the current year, entitled «Infrastructure and Energy Sustainability in a Changing Climate». The event brought together distinguished Professors from both universities, many of whom are NTUA alumni. The workshop was held at the Zografou Polytechnic Campus, attracting students, researchers, and Professors, and was also available via live stream, which was watched in real time by more than 700 viewers.

The presentations and discussions focused on critical challenges of the energy and environmental transition, covering topics such as:

  • Decarbonisation of the building stock through advanced analytical tools
  • The use of trustworthy artificial intelligence to address climate change
  • The challenges and limits of smart cities
  • The application of artificial intelligence in autonomous mobility

The presentations covered, among other topics:

  • The sustainable electrification of Europe’s first «Renewable Energy Valley»
  • Strategies for reducing the carbon footprint
  • Technological solutions for fire prevention and suppression
  • Innovative approaches to infrastructure monitoring using IoT and non-destructive testing methods
  • Measures to enhance infrastructure resilience and adaptation to climate change

This workshop is the first in a series of events to follow within the framework of the collaboration between NTUA and Columbia University.
