With the participation of 230 delegates from around the world, the 20th Congress of the International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean (IMAM 2025 – 20th International Congress of the International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean) was held with great success, hosted in Platanias, Chania, from 28 September to 3 October 2025.
The congress was organised by the School of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), in collaboration with the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology (ELINT), under the chairmanship of NTUA Professor Konstantinos Spyrou and co-chaired by the Dean of the School of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering, Mr. Konstantinos Belibassakis, and the President of ELINT, Dr. Nikolaos Liapis. During the opening ceremony, the Rector of NTUA and Professor of the School of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering, Mr. Ioannis Chatjigeorgiou, welcomed the delegates and delivered a greeting.
Within the framework of the congress, 145 original papers from 25 countries were presented, as well as 2 keynote speeches delivered by:
Dr. Arthur Reed (David Taylor Model Basin, West Bethesda, USA), with the title “Trends in Naval Hydrodynamics”,
Professor Emeritus of NTUA Spyridon Mavrakos, with the title “Developments in the Floating Offshore Wind-Turbine Supporting Structures Technologies”.
Of particular interest was the round table discussion, with the participation of experts and representatives of international organisations, which focused on a topic at the forefront of international shipbuilding interest and characterised by significant divergence of opinion among shipping companies, classification societies, and shipyards: the revision of North Atlantic wave heights and periods used in both the IACS Unified Requirements for Ship Strength and the IMO Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria.
The Proceedings of the IMAM 2025 Congress were published by Springer in four volumes under the general title “Innovations in Sustainable Maritime Technology – IMAM 2025” and with different subtitles according to the thematic section:
a) Ship Motions, Hydrodynamics and Propulsion
b) Ship Design, Ship Structures, Offshore and Coastal Engineering and Renewable Energy
c) Alternative Fuels, Decarbonization, Electrification, Marine Engineering and Marine Pollution
d) Ship Operations, Autonomy, Safety, Digitalization, Human Factors, Logistics, Shipyard Organization
Alongside IMAM 2025, the 20th International Ship Stability Workshop (ISSW 2025) was also held from 1 to 3 October, with the participation of leading experts in the field. The event offered the possibility of joint registration and participation in both conferences.
