Teaching Science and Integrity: The National Technical University of Athens Honours Its Distinguished Member, Professor Emeritus of the School of Civil Engineering, Theodosios Tassios

With particular splendour and in an atmosphere of deep emotion, befitting the historic legacy of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the multifaceted personality of the honouree, the tribute ceremony in recognition of the long-standing contribution to science, society and education of Professor Emeritus of the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA, Theodosios Tassios, took place on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, at the historic Averoff Building.

The ceremony was honoured by the presence of His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Konstantinos An. Tassoulas.

The Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis was represented by the Deputy Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Mr. Nikos Papaioannou, while the Archimandrite Mr. Dorotheos Kiousis attended as the representative of Archbishop of Athens Ieronymos. The event was attended by a large audience, including party representatives, the President and members of the Academy of Athens, business leaders and representatives of public-benefit foundations, senior members of the judiciary, current and former Rectors of Greek universities, and the Institution’s entire administration, faculty members, and the honouree’s colleagues and collaborators, in a gathering of high institutional and historic significance.

Ο Πρύτανης του NTUA, Καθηγητής Ιωάννης Κ. Χατζηγεωργίου στον χαιρετισμό του, ανέδειξε τον ιδιαίτερο ρόλο του Πολυτεχνείου ως ιστορικού ιδρύματος και θεσμού, άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένου με την πορεία της χώρας, τη δημοκρατία και την κοινωνική πρόοδο. Τόνισε ότι το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο, ως «κτήμα του έθνους», δεν περιορίζεται στην ακαδημαϊκή αριστεία, αλλά διαχρονικά συνομιλεί με την κοινωνία και την πολιτεία, καλλιεργώντας γνώση με αξιακό και ανθρωποκεντρικό πρόσημο. Στο ίδιο πνεύμα, προέβαλε τον Θεοδόση Τάσιο ως εμβληματική μορφή αυτής της παράδοσης, έναν δάσκαλο που υπηρέτησε το Πολυτεχνείο όχι μόνο ως κορυφαίος επιστήμονας, αλλά και ως στοχαστής με ευρύ ανθρωποκεντρικό ορίζοντα, ικανό να συνδέει την τεχνική σκέψη με την ιστορία, τη φιλοσοφία και την ευθύνη απέναντι στον άνθρωπο και την κοινωνία.

Στον χαιρετισμό του, η Α.Ε. ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας, κύριος Κωνσταντίνος Αν. Τασούλας, εστίασε στο παράδειγμα ζωής και σκέψης του τιμώμενου, επισημαίνοντας ότι ο πνευματικός μόχθος και η επιστημονική δημιουργία συνιστούν δημόσιο αγαθό, θεμέλιο της δημοκρατικής συγκρότησης και της κοινωνικής συνοχής, ιδιαίτερα όταν συνοδεύονται από ήθος, μέτρο και επίγνωση των συνεπειών τους. Αναφερόμενος στην προσωπικότητα του τιμώμενου, ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας σκιαγράφησε τον Θεοδόση Τάσιο ως σύγχρονο homo universalis, έναν στοχαστή που αντιστάθηκε στη μονοδιάστατη εξειδίκευση και ανέδειξε την τεχνολογία όχι ως ουδέτερο εργαλείο, αλλά ως ανθρώπινο και πολιτισμικό φαινόμενο, άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένο με αξίες, επιλογές και κοινωνικές συνέπειες. Τόνισε δε, ότι η εκδήλωση αυτή αναδεικνύει το παράδειγμα ενός ανθρώπου που υπηρέτησε με συνέπεια την ιδέα της γνώσης ως δημόσιου αγαθού, συνδέοντας την επιστημονική δημιουργία με την ευθύνη, το ήθος και τη δημοκρατική συνοχή.

He finally noted that the presence of the State in a historic university setting, dedicated to honouring a teacher of science, concretely underscores the importance of dialogue among institutions, education and society, especially in an era of complex technological and social challenges.

Ο Ομότιμος Καθηγητής του NTUA, κ. Γ. Γκαζέτας και η Ομότιμη Καθηγήτρια του NTUA κα. Ε. Βιντζηλαίου παρουσίασαν το έργο και τη διαδρομή του τιμώμενου ως κορυφαίου επιστήμονα, αλλά και ως πνευματικού δασκάλου που καλλιέργησε γενιές φοιτητών, που δεν μεταφέρει απλά γνώση, αλλά διαμορφώνει κριτική σκέψη και ήθος, και αντιμετωπίζει την επιστήμη ως αναπόσπαστο μέρος της πολιτισμικής και κοινωνικής εξέλιξης. Κατέληξαν σημειώνοντας ότι, όπως αναδεικνύεται μέσα από το συγγραφικό του έργο, θεωρούσε πως ένας θεμελιώδης στόχος κάθε πολιτείας είναι η «αθανασία» και ότι η πολιτική, στη βαθύτερη φύση της, ανήκει στο πεδίο της ηθικής. Παράλληλα, αναδείχθηκε ότι κεντρική του επιδίωξη υπήρξε η καλλιέργεια μιας ουσιαστικής μαθητείας στους φοιτητές του: η ενθάρρυνση της διερώτησης και της αμφιβολίας, η αξία της επίμονης προσπάθειας και της ενεργού συμμετοχής, η ενίσχυση της κριτικής σκέψης και η καλλιέργεια της κοινωνικής ευθύνης, μέσα από αξιακά πρότυπα και τη δύναμη του προσωπικού παραδείγματος.

This was followed by the ceremonial presentation of the Institution’s medal bearing the emblem of Prometheus the Fire-Bearer by the Rector of NTUA.

Taking the floor, Theodosios Tassios addressed the fundamental distinction between science and technology as a distinction of roles, responsibilities and criteria. He stressed that science aims primarily at understanding reality, while technology is born from humanity’s need to intervene in it and to provide solutions to specific needs. He underlined that, unlike scientific knowledge — which is judged on the basis of truth — technology must be evaluated through a complex framework of checks concerning functionality, safety, cost, time, as well as social and environmental consequences. Through this distinction, he noted that technical action cannot be value-neutral but presupposes judgement, restraint and responsibility — qualities that have perennially characterised both his scientific work and his public presence at the National Technical University of Athens.

A brief musical programme followed, performed by the Institution’s choir under the direction of Chief Conductor Michalis Oikonomou.

By conferring on Theodosios Tassios the Institution’s highest honour, the National Technical University of Athens also affirmed its enduring role as a higher educational institution that is not confined to the production of technical knowledge but cultivates values, critical thinking and social responsibility. The presence of the highest State authority at the historic Averoff Building of the National Technical University of Athens lent particular institutional weight to a ceremony dedicated to a teacher of science and public discourse. It also confirmed, in the clearest possible terms, the role of NTUA as a living institution of knowledge, dialogue and responsibility, at the forefront of the scientific and public life of the country.
