A New Era of Education in Greece through NTUA’s Collaboration with MIT Open Learning, Supported by the Bodossaki Foundation, the Eugenides Foundation, TITAN, and Accenture

A private donation agreement was signed on 12 January 2026 to fund the strategically significant collaboration between the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and MIT Open Learning, between NTUA and four donors — the Bodossaki Foundation, the Eugenides Foundation, the TITAN Group, and ACCENTURE.

NTUA Rector, Professor Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou, warmly thanking the donors, underscored the particular importance of NTUA’s collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the field of Artificial Intelligence — implemented for the first time by a Greek university through MIT Open Learning’s Universal Artificial Intelligence (UAI) platform — while also highlighting the significance of private-sector funding.

Under the collaboration with MIT Open Learning, the entire NTUA academic community gains universal access to the MIT OpenCourseWare and MITx platforms, as well as to MIT’s international Universal Artificial Intelligence (UAI) programme. The programme includes structured modules on artificial intelligence, ranging from the foundations of predictive, multimodal, and prescriptive AI to its applications in critical sectors such as engineering, medicine, climate, law, ethics, social sciences, and the arts. The collaboration also introduces a hybrid education model supported by active learning tools, automated exercises, assessments, certifications, and AI tutors, while NTUA faculty members will serve as producers and co-creators of knowledge. Specifically, they will develop their own high-quality courses and educational materials, which will initially be made available to NTUA students and may subsequently be incorporated into the international MIT UAI platform — making Greece’s leading technical university a hub for the export of educational content and academic expertise.

Of particular significance to NTUA is the fact that the MIT partnership was made possible through private-sector funding of $300,000, covering 75% of the total programme cost for the first two years of implementation. The participation of two major public benefit foundations and two prominent actors from the business and technology sectors underscores the breadth of support that this strategic collaboration has attracted.

The private donation agreement was signed by the President of the Board of Directors of the Bodossaki Foundation, Ms. Athena Desypri; the Director of the Eugenides Foundation, Emeritus NTUA Professor Ioannis Golias, former Rector of NTUA; on behalf of TITAN by Ms. Alexandra Papalexopoulou, Member of the TITAN Group Board of Directors and Chair of the Board’s Strategy Committee, and Mr. Sergios Sarafopоulos, General Director of TITAN Greece; and on behalf of Accenture by President and Managing Director Mr. Kyriakos Sampatakakis. On behalf of NTUA and ELKE–NTUA, the agreement was signed by NTUA Rector Professor Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou and Vice Rector for Research, Innovation and Outreach Professor Emmanouil Varvarigou.

At the signing ceremony, NTUA was also represented by Professor Nectarios Koziris, member of the Institution’s Governing Council; the programme’s Scientific Director, Professor Georgios Stamou; Vice Rector for Administrative Affairs and Student Welfare, Professor Panagiotis Psarrakos; Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Lifelong Learning, Professor Athanasios Zisis; and the Deans of the Schools of Mining & Metallurgical Engineering and Architecture, Professors Dimitrios Damigos and Matthaios Papavasileiou, respectively.

This collaboration reflects the convergence of a strategic choice by the National Technical University of Athens to pursue high-calibre international academic linkages with the concrete response of public benefit and private sector actors who chose to support an agreement of particular importance for Greek university education.

The National Technical University of Athens and Columbia Engineering successfully co-organised the first scientific workshop of the current year, entitled «Infrastructure and Energy Sustainability in a Changing Climate». The event brought together distinguished Professors from both universities, many of whom are NTUA alumni. The workshop was held at the Zografou Polytechnic Campus, attracting students, researchers, and Professors, and was also available via live stream, which was watched in real time by more than 700 viewers.

The presentations and discussions focused on critical challenges of the energy and environmental transition, covering topics such as:

  • Decarbonisation of the building stock through advanced analytical tools
  • The use of trustworthy artificial intelligence to address climate change
  • The challenges and limits of smart cities
  • The application of artificial intelligence in autonomous mobility

The presentations covered, among other topics:

  • The sustainable electrification of Europe’s first «Renewable Energy Valley»
  • Strategies for reducing the carbon footprint
  • Technological solutions for fire prevention and suppression
  • Innovative approaches to infrastructure monitoring using IoT and non-destructive testing methods
  • Measures to enhance infrastructure resilience and adaptation to climate change

This workshop is the first in a series of events to follow within the framework of the collaboration between NTUA and Columbia University.
