Fotis Sotiropoulos

My studies at the School of Mechanical Engineering at NTUA during the 1980s gave me not only the foundational knowledge I would need for my subsequent academic and professional path, but — more importantly — they gave me the confidence to believe that I am capable of achieving anything. They taught me to envision, to set ambitious goals, and to strive constantly to become the best I can be in my field.

The high standard of the studies, the difficulty of the examinations, and the emphasis on excellence made me feel that, having succeeded at NTUA, I had nothing to fear from any challenge. My passion for fluid mechanics I owe to Sokrates Tsangaris, who first introduced me to fluid theory. Equally decisive was the guidance of Kyriakos Giannakoglou, who was at that time beginning his scientific career at the Laboratory of Thermal Turbomachinery. He taught me the fundamentals of computational fluid dynamics and, above all, taught me how to think strategically when confronting difficult problems.

Without these foundations, I do not believe I would have achieved what I have in my subsequent career. NTUA helped me acquire solid scientific grounding, shaped my way of thinking, and gave me the confidence to pursue bold visions and to set and accomplish high goals. I feel boundless pride in being a graduate of this great institution!
